Member Spotlight: Michael Miller

Updated: Mar 12

Michael Miller joined Ola Kai Functional Fitness on October 19, 2023. Following a visit to the doctor, he received news about certain health issues, which he will elaborate on shortly. Taking his doctor's warnings seriously, he committed himself to attending classes consistently, and we observed his unwavering determination every time he entered the gym. Witnessing his victories felt like personal triumphs for Jimmy and me. Over time, we saw remarkable improvements in his mobility, strength, and confidence, accompanied by significant weight loss.

In less than five months, Michael has successfully shed 50 pounds, but his dedication doesn't stop there. As he progresses in his weight loss journey, his commitment only intensifies. We take immense pride in celebrating all of his achievements. Below, Michael shares insights into his transformative journey by answering a few questions.

What brought you to Ola Kai?

My doctor said I seriously needed to lose weight.

What is your favorite thing about Brigantine?

Love the cooler weather in the early spring and the summers.

Your commitment and consistency here in the last 4 months is very impressive.  Can you talk about your journey and what motivates you to stay so consistent?

I found out I was pre-diabetic, my cholesterol was off the charts, and that I was considered morbidly obese.  It was kind of a wake-up call after holing up, slacking-off and comfort-eating during the pandemic.  All these factors, along with looking god awful, made me driven to do something about it.

What are some of the biggest benefits you have felt since you started at Ola Kai?

Almost too many to recount.  I just turned 60 and my flexibility and strength had been greatly diminished.  I’m a constant gardener, and now I can bend over easily to weed and lug the bags of mulch in the spring with much more ease.  Exercising regularly also made me more mindful of my diet.

What class do you enjoy the most??

I love the yoga with Stacy.  And anything with Jimmy or Christina.  Actually, I’ve never taken a bad class here.  I’ve worked out in some nice gyms, too.  This one is up there with the best.

Were you intimated to start at Ola Kai? If so, what helped you get over that fear?

I wouldn’t say I was intimidated, as much as I was in no shape to make it through an entire class.  The staff was incredibly patient, and they tailored the workouts so that I could eventually find my footing.

Any advice for someone who hasn't worked out in a while or never at all?

Just do it.  The first several weeks will be tough—but it’s so worth it.

What is your favorite thing about Ola Kai Functional Fitness?

Definitely the staff.  Great motivators.  Totally caring.  Dedicated.

What’s one thing you’ve achieved since becoming a member?

After losing fifty pounds, I’m breathing better, I am no longer pre-diabetic, and my cholesterol is back to normal.

What is one fitness goal you have in the coming year?

I want to see my abs again.  I've got a ways to go!
