Member Spotlight: Tom Newcomer and Julianna Rote



As previously mentioned, the most challenging aspect of our newsletter is selecting just one member to spotlight each month. However, we're bending the rules a bit this month because we believe they both deserve recognition.  


Witnessing other couples embrace fitness together brings us immense joy.  Tom and Jules, who are part of our 5:30 am group, exemplify dedication and effort in every workout they tackle. While Tom is relatively new to group classes and barbell exercises, his progress in strength and speed within the class is inspiring to witness. On the other hand, Jules entered with a wealth of experience, yet she consistently strives to enhance her strength and speed, motivating both women and men in any class she attends.


The dynamic energy of this power couple shines brightest during partner-style workouts in our classes. Their mutual encouragement not only pushes each other to their limits but also motivates everyone around them to give their all. Thus far, they remain undefeated in these partner workouts.


We've asked Tom and Jules a few questions to provide further insight into their journey. Let's take a closer look at who they are.


What brought you to Ola Kai?

We wanted a change and to try something new that we haven’t necessarily done before.


What is your favorite thing about Brigantine?

We are lucky to have all of our favorite people in one place but we also love Sunday Fundays at the jetty.


How long have you lived in Brigantine?

Tom was born and raised on the island. Jules' parents have had a summer house since she was 5. She has lived here full time for 11 years.


Where is your favorite place on the island to eat?

Tiki Taco


What do you do for a living?

Tom is a member of the Brigantine City Fire Department. In his younger years he was also a lifeguard for the Brigantine City Beach Patrol.

Jules was a Philadelphia police officer for 2 years before transferring to the Brigantine Police Department.


How does the type of training you do at Ola Kai helps you in your jobs and your personal lives?

We both feel more confident in our abilities at work


What physical benefits are you seeing from your workouts at Ola Kai?


We have more energy but I also feel like it helps us stay in a better routine. We are motivated to get up early and workout so our sleeping/eating schedules are more regimented.


What are some of the biggest benefits you have felt since you started at Ola Kai?

Juls- I feel so much stronger and I am constantly achieving new PR’s. 

Tom- it has helped me maintain my weight loss and it’s pushing me to continue to work hard.


What is your favorite part about working out with your spouse?

It’s something we can do together to spend time with one another. It’s hard to see each other with our schedules so we enjoy going to the gym. We push each other to go to class and workout even when we might not want too. We are also competitive so we push one another.


What classes do you enjoy the most?

We are part of the 5:30 gang but also LOVE the Saturday partner workouts and competitions.


How does it feel to be the partner workout champs right now?

Like badasses. But also it pushes us to continue to strive for success. Even on the days we don’t want to show up or don’t have our head in it, we can’t let ourselves down or our partner so that is motivation.
